Hello Cynthia
Welcome to a great group. Think you will enjoy yourself here.
There are a few suggestions I would like to make. Can you contact the
previous owners to find out what they had planted in the way of shrubs and
how well they did with them? If you do not care for what they had planted
now is a good time to prepare the soil where the shrubs were removed. Then
you will be ready next spring for your foundation plantings. Have all
winter to read up on them and look at photos. It is important to establish
what you want in the shrubs and small trees first and then plant what goes
in between or beneath.
Consider joining a local gardening club. Best source of information out
there for they will be your neighbors. Also a good way to meet other
gardeners and meet those in your new community. If you are into native
plants look for a local native plant society. Your local Chamber of
Commerce or garden editor of the paper should be able to assist.
For a good basics book that is low in cost and has good photos I like
"Perennials: How to Select, Grow & Enjoy" by Harper and McGourtney
Good luck and keep us posted.
