Ah! A subject I love, because I am crazy about ornamental grasses.
I have found that many of the species and varieties of Pennisetum do well
where hostas grow. Also, certain varieties of Miscanthus. I am growing M.s.
'Cosmopolitan' in morning sun only. It is faring well.
I suppose the most shade tolerant of all is Chasmanthium latifolium, but it is
quite a spreader.
For grass-like plants, nearly all of the carexes are shade tolerant. Try also
the luzulas---particularly L. sylvatica 'Marginata'. (I also grow L. nivea in
a bed where I grow gold and yellow hostas--this gets quite a bit of sun,
however.)
