Regarding Hystrix, I live and garden in zone 6 and have tried hystrix. It does
bloom but is not a very ornemental grass, at least not in my garden. I tried
it in two places and I believe it needs at least 3-5 hours of direct sun to
perform well (which I am not able to give it) Most of us (shade gardeners) can
get it to grow but the trick is to get it to grow well.It has a tendancy to
flop and I think that is because it needs more sun than I can give it. If you
have more shade than most grasses can take why not try Hackencholea both the
varigated variety as well as the solid green variety. Carex also does fairly
well in shade.
