Intro for newbie

Hello to all and thanks Sherryl Sanderfeld for the pleasant welcome.

I would like to first say that Marg Talt was a great influence to
seeking this list out,her wonderous(web) articles coupled with her
charismatic manner brought me here today..

My story(short version)is as follows:
A backyard suffering from lack of interest(had been a rental) and
multiple years of drought was the scenario of our newly but hastily (but
not new home)purchased abode.A job tranfer had required this move from
the lush north of our state (Idaho) to this high desert location.!

What a vision the backyard was(front was acceptable and remains
basically unchanged).....3 med.sized Colo.Blue spruce on the east
property line,a sprinkling of peonies along the house foundation and a
very weedy lawn.NO shade anywhere and it was very hot .

With limited funds but inspired with the open pallette awaiting we set
about making this 110'x60'(b.yard area) ours.
Being the one with the 'green gene'most of the planning fell to me.
I could not know then that this very yard,as poor as it was, would
essentially alter the course of life as I had known it and launch me on
7yrs of intense self education and a new business persuit.

8yrs and many changes later I now have some long sought after shade. So
here I am sitting in with you to learn what I can in this never ending
learning process called gardening..My growing conditions are:typical
desert type, high ph soils with attendant hard pan in unpredictible
spots, brutal summer heat but not always, and very cold zone 6 sometimes 5
winters, with unreliable snow cover..As I observe eastern growing
conditions and all your lovely greenery it sometimes seems a westerners
fantasy but on the other hand we have very low humidity ;-)

Thats more than enough, didnt mean to carry on so long.
I am pleased to make your acquaintance.

There was a time some 8yr.ago when we moved down here from the north of
the state (Idaho) that not only did not have one shred of shade in the
entire backyard(let alone plants, save a very poor lawn a few peonies
and 3 Colorado blue Spruce) but I wondered if there ever would be.On the
bright side I had an entire empty pallette to fill without the problems
of eliminating existing plantings.Neglected and bone dry from multiple
years of drought the project began..
