Saving the Roses

Jennifer: Cover the graft union on the roses, but leave the buds alone.
If they freeze, you can always cut them off (promptly) afterwards without
any damage to the plant. If they don't freeze, you may still be able to
enjoy some blooms in your garden. Some years I have left my roses without
any fall clean-up and the only detriment was a tougher battle with Black
Spot the following summer.

I have astilbe, of all things, in bud this week. In my area, this
particular variety blooms in late June (which it did). I am curious to see
if the buds will survive this week's frigid temperatures, and also wonder
if the plant will exhaust itself by reblooming at the last hour of autumn.
