Dave I grow 7 diffrent Epimedium and have never had any insect problems with
them here in Minnesota, they are a little slow to get started but once they
do and easy plants to grow and care for. I love them very much, they work
well in bright shade to half a day of sun, growing into thick clumps that
look good all season. Many are semi-evergreen, but all have nice foliage in
the spring and early summer.
They bloom early with a number of them before new leaves are produced in the
spring. The stems slowly creep under ground and can be divided almost any
time, but mid/late summer is best.
The easiest one to grow is E. X versicolor 'Sulphereum' with many good sized
yellow flowers. Plants grow 12 inches tall and this one spread at a fast rate
in comparison to others. The stems may grow 2-3 inches out from the many
clump each year.
Another easy one to grow is E. x rubrum with light red flowers that have soft
yellow centers, the new foliage in late spring develops a red cast that is
most prominent on the veins.
