Rounded hollow stems should help ID.  Diann, dig up a few bulbs and crush
them, then smell them.  Many ornamental alliums have an oniony aroma.  An
allium of any sort cannot travel any distance without seed or bulb
distribution.  If parts of this plant go into your compost, it may return
where you use the compost.  Various wild onions and garlic are notorious lawn
weeds and very hard to eradicate.  There is the possibility that the bulbs
were in the soil and became active visually if you stripped off sod to make
new beds.  Star of Bethlehem (ornithogallum) has a white stripe on the
foliage.
