commelina--unexpected rooting

I had just dug from a neglected garden, a commelina seedling---same family as tradescantia, and looks like a miniature, attenuated version of same---and since some pieces fell off, stuck them in a glass of water, hoping that the buds on one would continue to expand. Much to my wonder, both pieces rooted! although one didn't seem to have a node on the end.
According to the Thompson & Morgan seed catalog (for 1988), it is a H/HP and I assume, will die over the winter in Z6. The catalog also says that you can save the roots. So I'm going to dig it again and pot it up, along with the new rooted plants. It has a flower in absolutely gorgeous blue (like a gentian), and although it is small, is worth growing, I think. Has anyone else grown it?
I also bought a cortusa matthiolie pekinensis last year in Canada. It came with a bonus---a tiny variegated leaf columbine seedling. Now, the columbine is towering over the cortusa, and I want to separate them. Should I wait until they both die back, tease the roots apart and replant? Or wait until next spring? Thanks for your suggestions.
