Plants should be no more than 1/2 inch deep over the "eyes," they do best in
locations were they get sun in the spring filtered threw trees. Since they
go dormant in mid summer the canopy can be dense but in the spring they
should have direct sun before the leaves come out in the trees.
heavy organic well draining soils are best for the blood root that I grow-
though for me they are not long live plants but i do not have the double
forms- mine self seed around and every few years they come up in different
parts of the wildflower garden. i think my problem is that the area is too
dry most of the year, they like some moisture in the soil as long as they are
"green."
The reason they are called blood root is that when the root is broken they
have a reddish sap. I love the large fan shaped leaves which have a bluish
green color.
They grow into large clumps were happy and are one of the first plants in the
spring to bloom along with the hepatica.
The flowers bloom as the leaves are coming out of the ground and finish
before the leaves are fully expanded.
