Hi Josh
I have been reading these and wanted to mention the only thing I have
ever seen around here that makes a mound of black soil about 12 to 16"
across and if you dig down they have tunnels about 2.5" wide are pocket
gophers. I used to trap the darn things from hay fields when I was a kid.

Might it be a mole?

No, not a mole.  I am "blessed" to have those, as well.  They push up a
long run, not just a mound.
