The only thing I can say about pea gravel is be sure that your paths are
bounded by wood sides (2x4's set on edge and staked).  If not, pea gravel
spreads like the plague.  The cats dig in it, the kids get it in their
shoes and bring it into the house and it gets into your compost pile if you
have to rake leaves off of it.  It does look good, though I feel that it
gets too hot in our area (Calif.) to be fun to walk on barefoot.
