Re: [SG] German Iris dividing

I believe it's a really good time!!!
As fall nears, iris like a good amount of time to settle in their
new areas after dividing. And generally, fall is the best time to dig, divide,
transplant many of our plants. I would lift the clumps and cut the foliage
back about 6-8 inches from the rhizome in a sort of fan shape. Make sure that
when dividing, look for any problems like borers, rots and make sure to remove
them. The central area of a bearded iris clump is usually the oldest and don't
have much grow or use. Make sure each piece is firm with no signs of rot or
anything. And an adequate root system would be great!!! Remember not to plant
too deeply and spread those roots when you plant!!.
I usually like to dust my cut ends of rhizomes with a fungicide or dust and
let the cut ends heal a bit before planting again. The use of a bleach
solution I've heard about, but never tried. I guess it can help if the rhizome
had a problem that had to be cut away! Good Luck and hope you get elegant
blooms next spring. and what about that fragrance and wide range of color!!!!

Hope this helps,
