Hi! I just wanted to introduce myself as a new member. I live in a converted
hay loft near the Hudson River in the Bronx. The house is surrounded on
three sides by wooded hills, and on the fourth by a tree-lined driveway.
When I first moved here I tried to recreate the cottage gardens of my
childhood. Many mildewed, deformed and dead plants later, I realized that I
was doing something terribly wrong. You could say, in fact, that the
"genius" of the place outsmarted me. Now I'm trying to deal
straight-forwardly with the fact that my small beds get no more than three
hours of direct sun a day. Most woodlanders do very well for me--and (while
my husband wasn't watching) I recently ripped out some sickly Geranium 'AT
Johnson' and replaced them with Japanese painted ferns, which reach a
beautiful color in this bright shade. I am constantly on the lookout,
though, for plants that will flower in mid-summer. (I just ordered a
Kalimeris mongolica a.k.a. asteromoea--does anyone have experience with
this? It's been blooming in a really gloomy part of the New York Botanical
Garden all summer.) I am also always trying to find plants with straight
vertical lines. I just ordered some iris foetidissima, and will see how they
turn out. I look forward to hearing from all of you.
