Hort Business & Carmel

Hello Carmel,
My nursery business is now about four full years old. It grew out of my
garden. Also I learned propagation by cutting and seeds and all of my
inventory came from the garden until last year or so. I also do some
trading with other individuals and nurseries both in plants and seeds. I do
order about 40 percent of the nursery wholesale now and pot up for the
display area.
I began with no dollars and still try to make the nursery pay for itself
as it goes. I am not in debt with the nursery. The nursery has paid for
itself and next years inventory and supplies each year. There is money
turned over each year. does not cost me anything, but a major profit that
shows up as big bucks in the bank during winter will hopefully happen this
coming year. That is the plan in any case. I did not expect to make any
'real' money the first five years. if I had it would have gone back into
building the nursery.
I have reached maximum size as of last year for one person to handle. Now
that I have a partner in life we are working together it has become much
more efficient, but no larger. Next comes having to hire someone and I have
no intentions of going into that area.
Size of nursery display area is 10 cold frames 4 foot wide and 48 feet
long with 6 foot isles between each. The seedling area is another four
coldframes four foot wide and about 40 feet long.
