Hi everyone,
I am new to this list and new to shade gardening (actually gardening
in general). My husband and I bought our first house a year ago which
came with a very small garden. We are in northern CA (USDA zone 9
Sunset zone 16). Half of the space is in partial or completely shade
because of small trees, fences, and walls. There are lots of existing
plants in the shaded areas left by the previous owner, including some
digitalis, poppies, a tree fern (which I may have killed), begonia,
calla lily (which grew really well but never bloomed for me), and a
gaura.
The tree fern lost all its fronds this summer in unusual heat, and I
didn't water it enough. I don't know if it will grow back. If it
doesn't revive, I might replace it with some hostas. Does anyone have
good varieties that they would recommend? I like blue-ish or varigated
hostas, and they must not grow too big, probably no more than 2 feet
across when mature.
There is a pond in almost complete shade. We had some goldfish which
fell victim to the neighbor's cat. So now we're searching for good
plants to keep in it instead. The pond is quite shallow, not much more
than 1 foot deep.
In other parts of the garden, I have a small kitchen herb garden,
hydrangeas, a potato bush which blooms constantly, and several star
jasmine and true jasmine vines.
Whew! This turned out much longer than I originally intended. I am
looking forward to learning lots of great tips from the members of
this list.
Happy Growing,
