Hi all,
You know that sinking feeling you get when you can't find your
favorite and most important reference book? Well I have it right now!
Kentucky Wildflowers or Wildflowers of KY, published by the UK
extension office is out of date, out of stock and out of print. That's
where I think the informaton on the false trillilum is. I've check all
my other references and can't find what I'm looking for.
The plant I'm talking about looks, grows and acts like a Trillium, but
only gets 4 to 8 inches high, has brown flowers that open up right on
top off the leaves. They have three leaves and only one flower per
plant that are approx. 1 inch in size (if that big). I found these
particular ones in a hollow nest to the interstate outside of Nashville.
Any Iideas as to what it might be? I'm kicking myself for not tagging
them when I had the chance.
As far as the worts go there are many different kinds. I read an
article about them in the Herb Quarterly (issue 75, Fall 1997) It was
very informative, stateing that there are some 70 or so worts. What I
can find on them is that most can be found growing in hedgerows
(Culpepper's Color Herbal), which means that they do not require full
sun! Mainly used a medicinal plants but some were used in other ways
also.
Here's the ones I've found so far.
Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris, A. ludoviciana)
St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum)
Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca, L. sibiricus, L. heterophyllus)
Soapwort (Saponaris officinalis)
Lungwort (Pulmonaria officinalis)
Pennywort (Cymbalaria muralis)
Barrenwort (Epimedium sp.)
Ragwort (Senecio jacobaea)
Gipsywort (Lycopus europeaus)
Rupturewort (Herniaria glabra)
Dropwort (Filipendula hexapetala, F. vulgaris)
Toothwort Dentaria pinnata, D. heptaphylla)
Greater Masterwort (Astrantia major)
Birthwort (Aristolochia clematiitis)
Figwort (Scrophularia nodosa)
I'll add some more later.
Sally
