Hello; one of my favorite trees for dappled or partial shade (good for
understories) is Davidia involucrata. Catalogues always say hardy to Z7,
but I have one in my mismanaged garden, in the coldest section where even
Z6 plants don't live all winter. Paw-paws, dogwoods, redbuds, and many
ashes will tolerate shade very well in Z5. I like bird cherries (sorry, I
don't know the botanical name); no weeping branches, but the large,
dangling panicles of flowers give a weeping effect.
