Marilyn,
All of them would probably grow, but I doubt very much if they'd bloom, or
bloom well - which is the whole point of growing weeping cherries. Fruit
trees require sun to bloom. And, it depends on just how much shade your
friend has got. I've a very old weeping crabapple who is surrounded by
large trees, but manages to get enough sun to bloom - sun hits it in the
middle of the day, more or less. So, if your friend has any spots that are
open to the sky, she can try one, but she's taking a chance with romance.
Weeping cherries are so lovely when in bloom in early spring, but they are
very fleeting...suggest your friend go for another blooming item - what
about a Viburnum? My x carlcephalum not only blooms in a lot of shade, but
scents the garden in early spring and it is about 10 feet tall and 3/4 as
wide now....pretty well tree size:-)
The weeping form, however, is going to be hard to find with spring
blossoms. If it's only that form she wants, I second the cut leaf Japanese
maple - you can hardly find a more beautiful tree in this world - and there
are many cultivars out there with varying colors of foliage and form - some
get quite large and some remain very compact.
I got mine from Forestfarm about 10 years ago as small tube plants and the
one I have in the ground is a good size now - maybe 4' tall and about 6' in
diameter - and I think I only paid about $10 for it then....big ones are
*very * expensive.
