Nancy,
Not Clyde, but have to admit I was a tad surprised by his post as I only
know of one ivy in its immature form that doesn't really climb on brick or
anything else it can get its holdfasts on. That one is Hedera helix
conglomerata erecta; rather a neat form with small dark leaves that grow
herringbone fashion on the more or less upright stems - very slow growing.
It may very well climb if given the opportunity, but mine has not at this
point. The mature forms of Hedera helix are shrub-like and hard to find,
since they are created by taking cuttings of mature stems. I have one such
cutting that isn't doing much, but at least has not died yet, like the
others....we shall see what it turns out to do.
IMO, the small leaf forms are much neater than regular old Hedera helix and
many of these are not as aggressive, growing much slower and are much
smaller all around. One has tiny duck-foot shaped leaves hardly bigger
than a dime....pretty cute:-) There are forms with curly leaves (variegated
and unvariegated), forms with small bird-foot leaves, again variegated and
not, and variegations that run the gamut from bright yellows and greens to
chartreuse and limes to whites and greens. The variations seem endless.
