Rhonda -
Hi - I've had many struggles with the hydrangea in my zone 9 garden. Last
fall my cousin (who is a container gardener exclusively) gave me a hydrangea
in a 5 gal plastic terra cotta pot---soil was Jungle Grow (which is just a
nice mix of peat, bark, charcoal, etc.). This hydrangea just wasn't doing
well on her patio - too much late day sun exposure. Well, since receiving
this hydrangea I've literally simply given it water when it appeared thirty.
It is sitting next to a full shade bed (occasionally lit with a bit of
dancing light) and this hydrangea has leafed out nicely and has had at least
one bloom on it since April. I've has hydrangea's twice before in the ground
and they did not make it through the stressful heat of summer and the
moisture of the mild winters. This particular hydrangea seems extremely
happy in it's container....this is a wonderful blessing for me, this
hydrangea is a cutting from my grandmothers who passed on back on in 1974.
I'm not sure how well it will do outdoors should we have a hard winter - I'll
be anxious to see of the other imput on container grown hydrangeas
Happy gardening
