I have 2 huge silver maples in back. I've got wild ginger and sweet woodruff
increasing nicely under mine. Also planted under them are
Jack-in-the-pulpits, Trilliums, wild geraniums, twinleaf, Jacob's ladder,
white and red baneberries, some ...hmmm, actually a good part of my
wildflower gardens are under my silver maples.
I just let the leaves fall where they want and sometimes I add compost or
leaf mulch to them. They are pretty much left to themselves except that I
pull the maple seedlings out by the hundreds... I also run the sprinkler now
and then when it's real dry, but not as much as I do in my hosta gardens. I
suppose that if these same plants were growing under deeper rooted trees
they'd increas faster, but I think they are doing ok, considering.
I'd also go for it..I plant whenever I have the time, which isn't always when
it's best. But I do feel fall is a good time for it.
