Hi Cindy,
All of my Toadlilies are clumpers that gradually spread out in size over time.
None are what you would exactly call "spreaders" in the sense of a groundcover or
something similar. Some are open, some tight in their growth habits, but almost
all are upright in growth (there are exceptions that either arch or lay on the
ground).
For best growth keep the Toadlily in humus rich soil high in organics and keep
them moist, but not wet. They will definitely respond. This is one of those plants
that will reward you for the extra watering during dry spells and pout when you do
not. If they dry out they will bet browning on the leaves just about the time they
begin to bloom.
