Second the motion for honesty (and other topics)

From Jan Sacks, MA.

I agree with Arnold Koekkoek that in the sibrob we should be free to mention
good and bad qualities of specific irises we grow, as long as we do it fairly
and gently. It has been so interesting to hear from everyone about how
differently irises grow in different gardens, soils and areas of the country.
Clearly the ones that grow well everywhere are the stars, but it is great to
advise each other about the others, especially if one knows the secret to
growing a particular iris. It seems strange that siberians vary in their
cultural needs, but there is so much diversity in their appearance, perhaps
it is not so strange after all for their cultural needs to vary also.

I also think that it is not only the "modern" siberians that have
difficulties in growing. We have had difficulties with a number of "old
fashioned" siberians. Many of the historics which persist in gardens are the
most vigorous of their eras, but there were also many that were as unreliable
as some of the modern ones.

It is also important to remember that while we talk about "old fashioned"
form (like Shaker's Prayer and Summer Sky which have pendant falls) and
"modern" siberians (like White Swirl and all its descendants with flaring
falls) all of these forms are current. That is, people are currently
introducing irises with both types of form and variations in between. And
the Siberian Section in its judges handbook recognizes all forms as being
desirable.

We look forward to meeting Arnold in Iowa and all the other sibrobians who
are planning to go.
