Dividing Sibs

Siberians can be physically difficult to divide if they are large clumps. The hard part is just removing them from the ground and moving them around. If the clump is large and you are a small person then you probably need to break it up, using a method that is best for you, just to move it. If it can be handled, I sometimes pick it up and pound it on the handle of my spading fork. That will dislodge soil and loosen the clump root system enough so it can be pulled apart. Don't worry you will not hurt the plant.

The larger clumps I just place into a tub of water. I have an old wash tub just for this, we purchased it for our live Christmas trees which we later planted. Let the iris clump soak for 10 or 15 minutes, longer is better, roll it around in the tub every now and then and soon you can pull it apart. You can then cut it like any other iris. I have on occasion left the really large iris clumps soaking over night if not in a hurry. Of coarse there a lot of mud in the tub when you finish. I use a childs wading pool if there many plants to divide. Siberians are tough plants to divide and either way it takes a little patience.
