Re: New Plantings, Label Fun

From: Jpwflowers@aol.com

We have used the P-Touch since 1996 and have mixed success with it. The
first labels we made were black print on clear tape and used on Harlane
Labels which are a light green plastic. They look great but they started
degrading very quickly after the first summer and winter. We have a lot of
sun and the ones in direct sun just cracked and peeled off. Now we are
making our own labels out of roof flashing which is metal inside and painted
brown on one side and white on the other. We have put the p-Touch labels on
the brown side - still using clear tape but this time white lettering. They
are quite pretty and so far seem to be less vulnerable to peeling off. Don't
know whether it is the metal of the label or the darker color.

There is nothing worse than writing a label by hand and coming back in the
spring and finding it has faded away. For quick labeling we use a label
pencil - which has a very soft lead and never seems to fade. Ours come from
the Mellinger's catalog and can be bought by the one or the box.

Marty Schafer, northwest of Boston where spring is far ahead of usual and we
have iris ruthenica in bud, iris koreana in bloom (brought to us by our world
plant collector friend Darrell Probst), and our first SDB about to open any
day.
