Hi Bob,

I have better luck moving in the late summer up here
after bloom. I have decided (!) that we don't have a
spring like the rest of the world. If we are lucky, we
get part of May that can be considered spring-like.
Then we hop into summer which is great since is when
we get June bloom.

I think that even in this small area of northern New
Hampshire, there are so many micro-climates that it is
dangerous to make a general gardening statement but I
will anyway. ;-) We have so much late frost and snow,
that moving plants can be problematic in May and yes,
in August as well. I think are safe from a threat of
frost in this heat and humidity this August
considering the temp is 89.5 F right now. Just came in
from watering the garden in the noon-day sun.

I am moving, dividing, composting and giving away
irises. A friend said they liked smaller irises and we
happened to be standing near 'Elisabeth McEwen' (the
iris) and I dug it up and gave it to her. Just
happened to have my spade in my hand at the time...

plant them in the spring. <<<<<

Since I am a person who navigates thru life trying to
avoid unnecessary chores, I try to plant flowers once
when moving them. I dislike potting and do it very
rarely....if we did overwinter in pots, for sure it
would have to be plastic pots. The clay pots not only
crack here, they nicely crumble all over the garage
floor (it can get below zero in the garage).

Cheers,

Ellen
