Re: Virtual Iris Show

Jane; Yes this is a great way to get Irises seen. âThe Virtual Iris Showâ is a show taking place in the Iris Encyclopedia. Each month the wiki, as many people call it, gets more people looking at irises than any other website, blog, Facebook page, or even comprehensive sites such as Daveâs Garden. Each month over ten thousand individuals visit and the average visitor views almost 10 pages and sees 51 items. Search engines such as Google and Bing also find over a million items each month.

The Encyclopedia is a sub-site of the AIS website dedicated to providing 'free to the world' Iris information. It is still being created but contains 61,000+ cultivars and its visitors provide images for many of these. It is monitored by experienced irisarians and peer reviewed. Occasionally errors occur but it has a better track record than Daveâs Garden or All Things Plants or any site we know. And if reported they can be quickly corrected. I see it as not just a checklist but an enormous library of Iris literature. As with new libraries, it will contain videos, slide shows, and other media also. It will be what the irisarians of the world make of it. So every contribution no matter how small furthers the bank of knowledge that we all can draw upon.

To see the Virtual Iris Show click on this link; http://wiki.irises.org/bin/view/Main/VirtualIrisShow   then follow further links to different parts of the show. To compete in the show requires 3 views of each iris, but your images will be used to enhance the Encyclopedia. Some sections have offered prizes for the winners. Thanks  Bob

I am getting ready to close entries for the virtual Iris show on Aug 15. As we speak I have 100 of the entries from my files displayed. I may have another fifty to go, but would be happy to include more. Japanese and many other beardless are rather weakly represented. One of the reasons for having the show was to get plants seen that did not make it to regular shows because of timing. I would be delighted to receive more entries until the 15th.
