Hi Marty,
Yes, it was incredible. It was in virgin soil and in its first year put up 6 stalks with all but one having a third branch. It continues to be one of the earliest to bloom and the one of the latest to finish. A definite keeper.

Hi Maureen, I'm so impressed with the way you grow Banish Misfortune.
Though it's always had a high bud count in its home garden, 14 is
really incredible. The highest bud count we've had on a siberian was
10 on Forward And Back, a sibirica. It has five buds in the terminal
and two or three branches. We consider Gentle Lass pretty high at 6
buds per stalk and one of its siblings that was not as pretty had 7 or
8.
One might think that high bud count and multiple branches usually occur
with plants with small flowers, but two of the largest flowered
seedlings in our garden have three branches and seven buds. One of
them is a child of Bob and Judy's Sultan's Ruby and has the largest
flowers I've ever seen in a diploid.
On the question of the white sanguinea X white sibirica, Sporting
Chance is an example of that cross. It and all of its siblings were
blue violet. I echo Bob's recommendation of Snow Prince as the way to
go for a white sibirica. It has been a fantastic addition to the
siberian gene pool. I have also gotten white sibiricas from the SIGNA
seed exchange and they have added some interest to our seedlings.
One word of caution - the plant known as 'Sibirica Nana Alba' can be
very confusing. While its name suggests that it is a white sibirica,
it is actually a white sanguinea. This comes from a time when manyl
siberians, whether sibirica or sanguinea, were called sibirica by some
because they are in the section sibiricae. Another example of this
confusion is the plant 'Sibirica Schwann' which is also a white
sanguinea.
Season's Greetings to all, Marty Schafer

Hi all,
Jim Murphy here in still icy and frozen North Garden, Va.
I enjoyed Calvin Helsley's article in TSI which I just reread. The
high
bud count intrigued me, and I was wondering if everyone could list a
few
that have high bud count ( or branching) in their gardens.
I have few that have ever had more than 4 buds. CORONATION ANTHEM is
one, and some seedlings of mine of older form out of a Caesars Brother
grandchild. Jim
