Hi Barbara, when I make a wide cross, I take all the petals and stamens off when the flower is in the "bulgy" stage (that's Marjorie Brummitt's word),. That is, just before the flower begins to open. I open the flower by hand, removing the falls, standards and stamens as I go. This is a delicate process, since I don't want to break or damage the stylearms. Contrary to anything you might have read in the past, siberians do not self pollinate in bud.
-----Original Message-----Good luck with your crosses. If you do get more seeds than you need, you could always send them to a seed exchange, like the Species Iris Group of North America or British Iris Society.
