orchid as a color

From: Jim Sullivan <jimsullivansgarden@home.com>

Hello fellow iris robin members,
I finally have a chance to ask some people who should probably know -
what color is the color orchid. I have come across descriptions of
various plants having flowers described as being an orchid color and
just now read again of an iris as having an orchid color(actually in
Henry Mitchell's, The Essestial Earthman) . Now, I know the plants
known as orchids come in various colors so this just adds to the
confusion. So, I will await an answer from those who should
know(perhaps I should know, but I don't). Are there any "orchid"
colored siberian irises? Maybe those people who look at an obviously
non orchid flower and exclaim, " it looks just like an orchid!" actually
are refering to the color and aren't quite as daft as they sound. Also,
I might add that apparently the word orchid is derived from the greek
word, orkhis meaning testicle, but I don't think we want to get into
that. Just a question to start off the new millenium, eh! I will
thank all of you in advance.
                                               Jim in Saskatoon, Canada.
