I just got an e-mail and photo from Jean-Marc Boileau of a tetraploid seedling
that reliably has two blue falls and one red one. I have never seen this
before except in a single flower among many normal ones where there has
presumably been a mutation (or other accident)in color development. It
reminded me of a parallel situation. In the last few years I have had two
diploid seedlings (from quite different parents) in which the the left half of
each fall is blue and the right half is red. The "demarcation" line between
the two colors is quite sharp and each covers exactly half of the fall. This
is both interesting and decorative (to me at least) and I am lining one out
for further study. Has anyone else seen this? How about any other unusal color
patterns of this type? It's amazing what keeps showing up quite unplanned if
you grow enough seedlings. Better to be lucky than smartI guess.
Bob Hollingworth - where the new seedlings a germinating fast indoors, old man
winter has found us at least, the snow is building up at about an inch every
day and it's time to get the snowplough out.
