Greetings to all. I have been a silent member of sibrob for many
months, but I couldn't resist to Marty Schafer's request relating to
repeat bloom. I live in Chelsea Québec (zone 4) which is located
a few miles North of Ottawa. I have been growing Siberians for
11 years and I made my first cross in 1996. Since that time , I
have made more and more crosses every year. Growing and
hybridizing Siberians have become a passion.
Many Siberians do repeat from time to time here: Temper
Tantrum, Lavender Bounty, Sprinkles, Lucky Lilac, Ever Again,
White Prelude. But for reasons which are unclear to me,
varieties coming from the breeding lines of Bee Warburton and
Schafer/Sacks are by far the best repeaters in my garden.
Reprise, George Henry are reliable repeaters, while Springs
Brook blooms for a very long time then sends a few repeat
stalks. In 1999, Trim The Velvet and Blackberry Jubilee
repeated, but the star was Countess Cathleen (Schafer/Sacks
'97) which bloomed non stop for 3 weeks, took a break of about
10 days, then repeated for 2 weeks. Countess Cathleen also
repeated heavily in 2000. Pleasures of May is also a good
repeater. Some of my own seedlings from crosses involving
Careless Sally repeated until the end of July in 2000.
From what I have seen, the best repeats come from 2 or 3 years
old clumps. Good culture seems to promote repeat while
temperature (rain or drough) do not seem to play an important
role.
