Hello,

If anyone has direct experience with the free mailing list group:

http://www.topica.net/

I would appreciate hearing from you privately.

I have checked out the background and it is a well-respected internet company
that has thousands of e-mail lists and gives exceptional service to the
customers. I did join a flower list on it: orchid-l and a computer list and
another one called list-builders recommended by topica (which clogged up my
mailbox this morning and I quickly unsubscribed). The company is solid, based
in San Francisco and has been in business for exactly three years and is
growing. They have been able to expand with some of the best known and
well-repected computer folks in CA. They are on solid financial footing in the
geek world (which is saying a lot with all the start-ups and failures around).

One potential drawback: they have made their money by inserting ads (much like
Yahoo does) but NOT like our friend with the flower stationery - he has been
banned from our list, incidentally). There are no ads in the messages, of
course.

I have written more questions re storage of files, photos (attachments) being
used in the lists, etc.

The upside of Topica: ease for the subscribers. It is easily the most
user-friendly of the mailing list companies I have been investigating. They
also give 24/7 support to the list owners - eGroups is/was very supportive as
well. No problems whatsoever.

eGroups will be merged into Yahoo as Yahoo Groups soon...no date yet - but I
do not like the attitude of the Yahoo representative on the merger discussion
list...the eGroups staff on the discussion list do exhibit some concern for
the mailing list members and have almost a proprietary interest in their
groups staying afloat. following the dissolution of eGroups. The list owners
have
many unanswered questions of Yahoo and the answers are couched in what
amounts
to: I don't know..I will check...maybe so, maybe not, etc. That is not good
enough.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So the search continues for our new home. We may end up at Yahoo groups for at
least a short time - they will transfer us but if they don't I have back-ups
of our list members and we will find a home somewhere in cyberspace. Topica
will also transfer us en masse if that is where we will end up.
Cheers,
Ellen
