Re: Fertilizing Siberian Iris
Hi GLM-
I live in Syrcuse ,NY; have good top soil, and plant all siberians with
a soil mix of dehydrated manure and peat moss. This gives the roots a good
base; therefore, I top dress in early spring after growth starts with
pellets of dehydrated chicken manure and alfalfa pellets. The only other
ingredient thats important is water, water, water during dry spells. Plenty
of snow keeps my plants wet enough during the winter for good spring growth.
I believe in a wood chip mulch also to keep dirt cool and wet.
I,ve tried chemical fertilizers in spring and after bloom, but never
noticed any improvement in growth, especially on weaker growing plants.
Remember, I have good topsoil and have preped the planting hole.
Roses are heavy feeders, not so with siberian iris. With siberians its
in the genes. Tealwood grew very little over a 3 to 4 year period, and than
took off on its own last year. I fertilized it, but didn't see an
improvement. All the plants around grow fine. Ceasar's Brother is near it,
and it grows so well I think if you planted on the moon it would grow. So
build your soil, water, mulch and the siberian iris will do the rest.
