Re: sino-sibs and cal-sibes

Hi Folks,
         I have some experience with cal-sibes & sino-siberians. I grow
several of the former, they don't present any particular problems of
culture. They're hardier and more adaptable than either of their parent
groups. Sinos, on the other hand, are rewarding, but also
frustrating. They are inherently shorter-lived than Siberians. You can
count on them to over winter in zone five, but if you have summer temps
above 90 F for very long, many of them will dwindle away to nothing or
nearly so (although they'll try to come back). They also need more water
than Siberians. I can't really grow Clarkei & Delavayi as they should be
grown because I can't keep the soil moist enough.
If you want to try them, and I encourage you all to try, be
prepared to kill some plants. You'll have to discover for yourself what
works in your region. I have tried to pass along plants that do well for
me to friends in Eastern Mass., also Zone 5, and they fail. The only
differences I can think of between my habitat and theirs is that they have
sandy soil & I have clay, and they have more sunny days than I do. They are
easy from seed, and SIGNA usually has interesting varieties, but I believe
in growing named cultivars as a means of improving the group.
Last year I was shown a note that was posted on alpine-L (a rock
gardening list) by Panayoti Kelaidis. He advocated growing them in a
kiddie swimming pool filled with a mix of peat and sand. I bought the
pool, but haven't got it installed yet. Sounds intriguing, though.
