What has always amused me, coming from many years of orchid growing as a
hobby, is the view held by irisarians about chromosome numbers being so
critical in breeding success. Maybe there is a magic rule for irises, but it
is no general rule about chromosome count matching or other rules in
orchids, for example.
I grow Catasetums as a 'specialty.' People are breeding, and blooming,
Catasetum x Cymbidium, Cycnoches x Ansellias and other totally bizarre
crosses. These are plants that morphologically are dissimilar, and that come
from Old and New world that have been isolated genetically for millions of
years. Many of these crosses are sterile, others are not. The chromosome
counts vary wildly; God only knows what goes on in the cells when they
combine.
My suggestion is, cross any iris that you want, and see what happens.
