Just for the record, the plants may have been my own submission but they
would not have been my choice for evaluation. Those shipped to Maine were
sent as a gift for personal use. Those shipped to Fulton in MA were sent for
evaluation but I was specifically asked to send only one F1 of each type
that I had successfully used in crosses. I went to great lengths to point
out that it was unlikely that hybrid characteristics would be noted in these
plants and crosses between the 2 lines were still some of the most difficult
to obtain.
"Who wrote the test? Who conducted the test? Is the test valid?". You tell
me.
I have no idea how Lorena Reid sets the stage for her crosses but Tony's
method varies considerably from mine. He approaches a cross from the
standpoint that the species should be closely related enough that
persistence will pay off and the right individual plants will produce seed.
I don't give a hoot how closely related plants *should* be. If evolution by
hybridization is a genuine possibility, the proper motivation should be
enough to get any plants relatively closely related to produce viable seeds.
If naturally produced hybrids are genetically capable of retaining an
identity separate from the parent species, induced hybrids should behave
similarly. In this case parental traits could behave as recessives.
It may be that the way in which a seedling is produced affects it's
appearance and behavior more than the relationship of its parents and it's
something I'd like to take a closer look at.
