Dear Anna Mae,
Thank you for being in touch and for the holiday greetings. We are in the
midst of a snowstorm today. I hope that snow will collect on the gardens
and insulate them for the remainder of the winter. I have been working on
our catalog and descriptions of introductions for 2005. Eartheart Gardens
is introducing a late, repeating dark purple for Currier. I believe that it
would be described as an occasional rebloomer. The rebloom occurs
consistently 2 months after 1st bloom. It reblooms every other year. The
falls appear to be diamond dusted, the signal has a slight green hint that
ends in a solid, nearly black halo that extends around the top sides of the
signal. I am waiting on an OK from the registrar for the name we selected.
We have seed from a few successful 2004 Siberian takes which may move along
our mini and 6 fall Siberian breeding program. I used the Hollingworth's
Hello Yellow with some of our yellows-just couldn't resist.
Eartheart Gardens is introducing Dirigo Tiffany Pink and Dirigo Black Knight
for John White. Dirigo Tiffany Pink is a true a pink as we have seen,
stands 36" high with white style arms and an off white signal. Dirigo Black
Knight is a purplish blue-black with a platinum wire rim. It is ruffled and
has a gold blaze.
The main focus of my hybridizing work has been with the Japanese Iris Deep
Freeze project. Our goal is to produce a more winter hardy Japanese Iris.
In 2004 we were able to evaluate and discard some of the year 2000 seedlings
(Russian species x Modern hybrids) We made F2 crosses (Russian species x
modern hybrids X Russian species x modern hybrids). Last season we also
made additional crosses of F1 Deep Freeze plants x modern hybrids.
We also have an interesting tet JI seedling bed.
I continue to evaluate Currier's more recently developed seedlings. As I do
so I remember Currier's prediction that it would take at least 10 years
after he had moved on to see his work to completion.
May you new year be filled with love, light and miracles.
Sharon Whitney
