Re: still bloomin' on July 16th/summer dividing

I'm a bit late in responding to this thread.
I had some nice repeat bloom this year--amazing continuing the ever-worsening
drought. CORONATION ANTHEM, EVER AGAIN, STEVE VARNER, and a few others
repeated nicely. DEMURE ILLINI repeated amazingly well with bloom almost as
heavy as this springs bloom. The last flower on the repeat just closed over
the weekend. It was nice having the magenta and white next to some daylilies.

Also, I learned about dry Sib rhizomes while digging last week. I know now is
not the time to divide Siberians, but I have some plants that must be moved.
When I dug them, I noticed how dry the roots were and this concerned me since
I know Siberian roots and rhizomes must be kept moist while out of the
ground. Well, in the process of dividing, a few rhizomes didn't make it into
my buckets of water. Now I know what a truly dried out Siberian iris rhizome
looks like. <g>
The good thing about digging during this drought is that the soil around the
roots is easier to break up.

We are on mandatory water restrictions now. We are permitted to water every
three days for 3 hours before 9:00 am and after 6:00 pm. Three hours isn't
enough to water my 1/2 acre property so I had to get a special permit
allowing me to water for longer than 3 hours. The lawn looks miserable (at
this point I'm just trying to keep it alive, not green), but the Siberians
seem to be doing okay.
