Dear Peter,
My apologies for taking so long to respond.
After receiving your email of July 02, I went out to both Currier's and my
display beds to check on the performance of Exuberant Encore.
Here at Eartheart we have a nice clump established and it was blooming as
you had described. It is what I think Currier would call a preferential
repeater. Shows its good qualities best at rebloom. I took the time to
look up its parentage and will check it with the parentage of some other
repeat bloomers this winter when I have some time to research.
I would be interested to hear if others have grown it and how it does in
other parts of the world.
Currier has worked hard to develop siberians and Japanese iris that push the
envelope in terms of bloom time. I know that other breeders have worked on
this as well. I am not as up on the work of other breeders as I would like
to be. Currier's most reliable repeaters in our gardens in Maine are: Soft
Blue, Chartreuse Bounty, Lavender Bounty, Harpswell Prelude, White Prelude
and Ever Again. Others rebloom some years.
Our 2002 introduction, Little Centennial, continues to bloom for almost 6
weeks. Just as you think it is winding down, it gears up again.
Over last winter when I was writing the catalog and thinking about Currier's
100th birthday and reflecting on his work, I realized that he has done a
great deal of work to extend the bloom season on SI and JI. As a result of
this thinking, I offered a collection of "Reliable Repeaters" in our catalog
as part of the celebratory year's activities.
Actually I hope to send some late blooming named SI and seedlings to a
friend whose garden in on the tour at next JI convention in Maryland. It
seems a shame that these late bloomers aren't seen at the SI shows and
conventions.
Currier's best rebloomer (repeat bloomer) is Ever Again.
I hope that I haven't rambled too long.
We are off to Hermit Island for a week's vacation tomorrow. I will not
receive email for at least a week. No phone, no weeds!!
Sincerely,
Sharon Whitney
