Margaret,
What you describe is typical of the way borer presents itself with Japanese
irises. Sometimes, when you pull the brown leaf out, you can see the tiny
borers at work. When this occurs, I mix Cygon (yes I still have some) in a
watering can and douse the entire plant. If you catch it early in an
established clump, that's the end of it....until next cycle. If it's a new
clump, there is a good chance you will lose it.
