weeds

Like Ken Walkup, I have a very large home garden but certainly
not anywhere as big as the commercial gardens.

When I planted my Siberians in mixed borders in this property
about five years ago, I gave them 'huge' areas for increase. The
first two years I had sort of a bare garden around all of the
irises (not just Sibs) and had to seed annuals since I had large
areas of no flowers. But I did have WEEDS galore. The Sib clumps
are so large now that very few weeds can manage to creep in
there. I do weed, all by hand, the tall grass that gets in the
Siberian clumps. Most Sibs grow so tall here that I let the
short weeds stay since they don't interfere with the plant.

For Siberians here, the first two years are the most labor
intensive. I do all the planting, weeding and flower care
myself while my husband digs the beds. I realize that our
climate is extreme and weeds are far worse in other areas but
we do have our share. Some of the wild flowers I am delighted to
see in the garden and also some of the native grasses that are
attractive. I coddle them only to a small extent. I guess some
would say that I have an unruly garden but it pleases us. No
bare spots anymore. :-)

We have rain almost every day and usually a period of 'cool' sun
and chilly nights.

As usual, waiting for the rain to stop.....
