Margaret, We're not scientists so this is just anecdotal, but we have
used imidichloprid in the form of Merit 75 WP for three years now for
borer control. According to the literature it does effect bees and
should never be used on open flowers. On the other hand it is slow to
translocate through a plant. It can take up to 6 months when used as a
soil drench. So we use it in spring - when the irises are about 6
inches tall - and after the first real warm spell. We don't drench the
ground but just spray it on the foliage and include a liquid fertilizer
in the spray to speed the absorption. Our experience is that it kills
the borers long before there are any flowers in the picture. I don't
believe that there is any of the chemical in the flowers once they
open. We have a significant population of bees and have seen no
decrease. In addition, the Merit does not kill the orthocheata (fly
maggot) in the flowers - which it would if it was in there.

There is one thing to be concerned about using the imidacloprid (sold
also as
Merit), or so I've read. It can get into the nectar, or pollen, I
don't
remember which, and affect the bees so someone who's good at finding
out about
this please let the rest of us know?
