{Disarmed} Re: new topic - SI popularity

Preventing borers is also a solution to the problem, but I understand your point. I also prefer to not use chemicals unless there is no other choice. However, how do you easily identify borer infestations on Siberians before the fan dies? On TBs I've found this to be easy as the damage to the foilage is usually readily apparent and you can then easily kill the borer by pinching the fan during the daily garden walk-through. But I've rarely found much evidence of foilage damage on my Siberians until after the borer is down in the rhizome. In contrast to the TBs, where the borers start quite high up on the foilage (thus giving you some time to see them), they seem to start much lower on the Siberian foilage (often only a few inches above the soil line) thus giving little or no evidence of their presence until the fan dies. In fact, the few times I HAVE noticed borer damage on a Siberian before the borer reached the rhizome has been where the fans were close packed and the borer went sideways through multiple fans before going down to the rhizome. So how do you recognize borer damage on Siberians while you can still pinch the borers out?

Arthur,

Exercised, I prefer not to use chemicals as a preventative but as a solution.

When I lived in northern California they were non-existent, but here I've found them in the one clump of TBs I inherited when I moved in and I have found them in several of my siberians this year as well (although the borers seem to prefer the larger tetraploid siberians over the older diploids). Even more distressing, I've found borers in two of the nine commercial shipments of new Siberians I ordered this year. And, in siberians, I've found it hard to detect borer damage until it is too late - usually I found out when the rhizome dies (with the center of the fan going brown) and I find the borer when I pull up the rhizome. What do list members use to keep borers out of their siberians?
