Hi Jeff and all sibrob members! I've been a "lurker" on sibrob for over a
year and enjoy the commentary and helpful information. Guess hearing from
someone close to home motivated me to introduce myself. I'm in Readfield,
ME, Zone 4, have been gardening for 20 years, caught the Siberian bug several
years ago and joined the ME Iris Society. I have about 50 varieties
presently and am a little past midway through the bloom season here. Some of
my favorites are SULTAN'S RUBY, ELIZABETH MCEWEN, CARELESS SALLY, AQUA
WHISPERS, NEAT TRICK, PAS DE DEUX and OVER IN GLORYLAND ( which has 2
bloomstalks on a plant ordered last year). Can't help you, Jeff, on your
question about yellow parents as I'm just a beginner myself. Last June, the
hybridizer John White graciously showed me his gardens and demonstrated his
hybridizing techniques. Presently I'm dabbling/experimenting and realizing
how organized one must be as well as willing to make the time commitments.
It will be exciting to see new plants bloom once arriving at that stage.
Regarding current topics of discussion, I have never yet lost any
Siberians but 5 of my Japanese Iris succombed to the winter. Do Jap. Iris
die if not divided frequently as one member suggested? I thought it was just
due to the winter conditions with insufficient snow cover.
Look forward to any responses,
Linda Porter
