Location makes a big difference.  If planted as a regular garden plant, JIs are
fine up to 4 years.  Then they really need to be dug.  If they are planted near
running water, they may not ever need to be dug.  The hypothesis is that the JIs
produce some toxic substance that builds up and kills the plant.  Planting by
running water would wash the toxins out regularly.
