Hello everyone!
I am exhausted and its only mid-season! Last Friday I conducted a Judges
Training on Siberian Iris in my garden. I had roughly 45+ people as part of
the Region 8 Northern Trek mini-convention. The Tall Bearded Iris Society
Exec. Board mtg. was held in Mpls. at the same time and many TBIS execs
attended. Many AIS judges from southern states had never been trained on
Siberians before. It was also fun to conduct my first garden training
session in front of Mr. Mullen, the AIS Judges Chair! In know I made a few
converts to Siberians that night!
New Siberians blooming in my garden for the first time:
Louison - Helsley '98 is impressive, Opal Wulf (TBIS) of Neb. purchased
this in a silent auction.
Mary Louise Michie - Miller ' 95 got a lot of attention and many bids.
Countess Cathleen - Schafer/Sacks -' 97 - gorgeous and more high bids!
I have many more I can't wait to see for the first time:
Elizabeth McEwen
Maurice Pope
Neat Trick
Also spectacular in the garden, but other beardless cultivars;
Asian Alliance - Spec-X - many a picture frame shot over this plant
Berlin Tiger - Spec-X
Versijack - Smaller red versicolor - I am waiting to cross this with the
Robusta "Dark Aura"
Because of the two shows I conducted and the Regional Convention I am still
to germinate about 1000 seeds of siberian and versicolor/virginica crosses
sitting in my refrigerator. I plan to irradiate with UV-B light a large
amount of of Gull's Wing seed crosses and will try to convert to
tetraploidy by herbicide the other half.
A very tired,
Bill Dougherty
Fridley, MN.
