Allan Ensminger's 90th Birthday


Greetings from Lincoln Nebraska,

Ellen Gallagher suggested that I post this message to sibrob also.  I
had posted it to Iris-Talk earlier today.  Allan does not hybridize
siberians, but he does grow some at his retirement home.  He has a few
cultivars of siberians in addition to some of his own bearded iris
introductions growing there.  If anyone would rather send an e-mail
message, you can forward it to me and I will see that Allan receives
it.  He does not have e-mail.

Allan Ensminger will be 90 years old on June 16th!!    He is doing very
well and is in good health.  He is still hybridizing and will be
introducing 2 new irises this year.

My reason for this message is that I would like for you to send Allan a
birthday card in celebration of his 90th birthday.  I am sure that he
would enjoy it immensely if we could flood his mailbox with cards and
letters from around the world.  Many of you grow his irises and, also,
many of you may have met him at past AIS national conventions.  He and
his late wife Gladys always loved to attend those conventions.  He no
longer travels much, even to our regional meetings, but he still talks a

lot about going to all those conventions and meeting all the wonderful
people there.

Allan has done a lot of work, as many of you know, on variegated or
broken color irises, and many of his irises are today used in breeding
for those newer broken color irises coming out each year.  Allan has
also done some wonderful work in most of the bearded classes including
SDBs, IBs, BBs, MTBs and TBs.  Some of his irises are quite well known
and many are very distinctive.  They include 'Batik', 'Vavoom', 'Sonja's

Selah', 'Brindled Beauty', 'Joy Joy Joy', 'Gladys My Love', 'Sings So
Softly', 'Very Varied', 'Autumn Years', 'Isn't This Something', 'What
Again', 'Yo', 'Solomon's Seal', 'Calorific', 'John Paul Jones',
'Brighten The Corner', 'Morning Show', and many many more.

Even if you don't know Allan, but know his irises and his contribution
to irises and AIS, please consider sending a card and maybe a few words
about his irises or his influence on you or others.  Allan really enjoys

other iris lovers and they invariably love him.  So, please send a card
and a little message.  Believe me, Allan will enjoy it tremendously!!
