I can answer some of your questions being that I have a commercial garden in
CA and sell a few Sibes.
Too the best of my knowledge, there are few commercial sources of Sibes in
CA. None have web sites that have Sibe photos. The most extensive is The
Iris Gallery in Fort Bragg. There are a number of commercial sources in
Oregon. The Region 14 fall convention usually has a nice selection of
Siberians for sale. Date this year is October 26 in Auburn. Don't think the
Oregon beardless speciality gardens have web sites either. I have 5 potted
Siberians left over from over 100 initially available.
California has diverse climates (most pleasant but not all). Growing Sibes
in Northern California is relatively easy. Michael Zarky is working on
growing them in Southern CA but success has been limited if I remember his
last email correctly. Since heat is the killer, most bare root planting
should be done in the fall (mid Sept to mid Oct is probably optimum most
years). This lets the roots get established before the maximum stress is put
on the plant. I think I know how to accept plants any time of year they can
be dug but some more experimentation is needed before I recommend someone
risk money/plants on my theory.
I have a list of what has done well for me that I can email. I could put
together a list of what I have killed but that would take some time as the
death list is definitely longer than the good performer list. With the good
performers, all I have to do is go to the garden.
There are a number of commercial gardens who are participants on this list.
I don't know anything bad about any of them. However based on personal
buying experience, the three that I would recommend for this pesky
Californian are Chehalem Gardens, Draycott Gardens and Iris City Gardens.
TSI has a commercial directory with more sources listed.
Hope this helps and doesn't upset anyone.
