RE: a beginner question

I just finished the first thing this morning so I have not yet tried
snapping Siberian stalks.

However in answer to Bill's question of any practical value to removing
stalks, I think so when overhead watering is used. The gap in the leaves
fills with water that is then trapped. This is more favorable to rot than
the scab which forms on the rhizome. It is doubtful that this is more than a
very minor probability. However it is a major aesthetic value and much
easier to do right after bloom season so I rushing to get it done.

Other than the aesthetic preferences of the individual, are there any known
objective reasons for removing the stalks of either bearded or siberian
irises?
